Fargo was a 1996 Coen Brothers movie, featured Billy Bob Thornton (as Molly Solverson), Martin Freeman (as Bob Odenkirk) and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman's performance in the role of Minnesota police officer Molly Solverson was praised by Vanity Fair, who wrote: "She calmly and confidently was the star of the performance". Tolman has also appeared in an appearance on the Mindy Show as Abby Berman a romance writer. The actress was the support character in Michael Douglas' horror comedy film Krampus. Following her breakout role in Fargo, Tolman declined several roles as moms, wives and best friends, looking for some more unique roles. Tolman was a part of ABC's Downward Dog based off the Animal Media Group webseries. The show lasted for one year. Tolman was a star in ABC's drama series Emergence which premiered on the 24th of September, 2019. It was cancelled on May 21, 2020, after only one season, despite "pretty solid" ratings, according to Tolman. She was also an guest on the NBC show Good Girls. In 2021, she starred in the role of Alma Filcott in the second season of the drama series Why Women Kill, and she also played Natalie Green in The Facts of Life section of the third season of Live in Front of a Studio Audience.
